What's a Listserv?
What is a listserv? A listserv is an e-mail mailing list of a group of people who share the same interest, in our case "Celiac Disease." Each person joins the particular mailing list as a member. What is the cost? In most cases, membership to a listserv is free. What is the benefit of joining a Celiac listserv? A listserv is a great way to communicate with other Celiacs through the Internet. Members share information about gluten free foods, restaurants, publications, Celiac research, and various other topics relating to the gluten free lifestyle. What does this membership entitle me to? A listserv membership entitles you to communicate with a group of other Celiacs by e-mail. You post an e-mail to the entire group at once. The content of the e-mail can either share information or ask a question. In either case, the subject of the e-mail must directly relate to the topic assigned to the listserv (Celiac Disease). Responses to the particular e-mail can go either to the entire group or to the individual who originally posted the e-mail. Are there guidelines I should follow? Each listserv has its own set of guidelines which each member is expected to follow. The purpose of a listserv's guidelines is to respect each individual's rights as well as to maintain the integrity of the list. What Celiac related listservs can I join? There are numerous Celiac related listervs available and can easily be located through a Google search. The ones used mostly by members of Celiac Support of Greater Phoenix are "PhoenixCeliac" and the "Celiac Listserv at St Johns University. " Tell me a little more about each of these two Celiac listservs and how to join. PhoenixCeliac - This is a mailing list for "Celiac Support of Greater Phoenix", Arizona. This is also a mailing list for Celiacs who live in the greater Phoenix area or plan to visit or move to the Phoenix area. You can use this mailing list to post your questions regarding the gluten free lifestyle in the Valley of the Sun. (Ex. Find a restaurant, GF shopping,etc) You will also receive support, as well as announcements from Celiac Support of Greater Phoenix regarding such things as meetings and events. The amount of mail generated by this listserve is approximately 5 pieces of e-mail per week. To join the PhoenixCeliac listserv click http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/PhoenixCeliac/ Celiac Listserv at St Johns University (New York, USA) This listserv has over 1000 members worldwide. It is an excellent resource for shared Celiac information. The amount of mail generated may be between 5 and 15 pieces of e-mail per day. To subscribe to the Celiac List, send an Internet e-mail message to CELIAC-subscribe-request@LISTSERV.ICORS.ORG containing "SUBSCRIBE CELIAC yourfirstname yourlastname" in the body of the message (without the quotes). How do I start once I've been signed on to a listserv? Simply send your first e-mail to the address instructed by the listserv. Customarily, your first post should be a brief introduction of yourself and your Celiac circumstances. Who do I turn to if I have questions about the PhoenixCeliac list?
